Day 18

Who knew a simple 90-second book trailer could be so difficult? Like much of my writing to publishing journey, I’m finding out the hard way that things aren’t as simple as I think they should be. The worst part is, I’m the problem. As the director directing what I want, I’ve complicated this production. I know what I want and I’m unwilling to settle for less.

The importance of a trailer can’t be overstated, which is why it must be top notch, first rate, professionally crafted. I have a very precise vision of the final trailer; the challenge being producing all hyper-realistic animation. Something you’d expect in a movie trailer, not a book trailer. I spoke with a director at UCF’s animation center and learned there’s more to this than I imagined, starting with the hours required.

I learned that graduate students are required to produce a 2-minute animation as part of their thesis. That’s 2 years to produce a 2-minute video, and I’m asking for 90 seconds. Doing the math, that ratio equals an 18-month production time. For $500. No wonder I’m hitting a wall. Now I’m thinking a 60-second trailer will suffice and maybe half the scenes can skip full animation. Even with those concessions, I’ll need to increase the budget to make this attractive. I’ll do whatever’s necessary to achieve the finished product I’ve envisioned.

Coming from a background in architecture, it was an architect who coined the phrase, “God is in the details.” Meaning perfection is achieved in our attention to the small intricacies. Condensing an 85,000-word novel into a 60-second video means every second must be scrutinized and impactful, 60 seconds to spark interest, to motivate someone to read Primis. I know what would work for me will work for others, just need to deliver this vision.

A trailer may be my strongest sales tool but it’s not my only one. Book events are great opportunities to place Primis in front of interested readers. One of the largest book fairs in the country is right here in Miami, starting next week. I’ll be scouting the event in preparation for next year. Between now and next year, there’ll be other fairs where I can present Primis, even before publication, to collect emails from those interested in pre-sales or notification.

To stand out at a book fair I need an attention grabber, preferably one that ties into my sci-fi, AI theme. I’m thinking a humanoid robot would be perfect. There’s close to a dozen different models in the market. I’ll be contacting those company’s marketing directors to explore promotional partnering. This may lead nowhere but not for lack of trying.
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
