Day 17

It’s been 2 years in the making but I finally did it, I finished my book! First let me clarify, I finished writing, now there’s editing. But that’s not stopping me from enjoying this milestone. As an analogy, I have the statue fully formed, now I just need some chiseling on the details.

OK, a lot of chiseling. When I was at 50,000 words I wondered if I’d ever make it to my 85,000-word target. When I hit 85,000 words I wasn’t as close to an ending as I expected. Now finally ending at 94,000 words, I’m looking at major book surgery. Trimming words is like losing weight, a painful process to get to a healthier book.

I’m guessing I need another month to get Primis to where it needs to be before I’m able to send it for peer review and wait for feedback. Another round of editing will follow and hopefully by end of year I’ll have a manuscript ready for potential agents. That day I’ll have a big celebration, second only to the day Primis is published. There’s light at the end of the tunnel.

On the book trailer front, I’ve run into a wall. The film students who expressed interest pulled out when they saw the production required life-like 3D animation. That wasn’t their specialty. Now I’m down to 2 outside sources who may be too quick to say they can produce this. I’m vetting them carefully. In hindsight, film schools may not have been my best first option. Actually, this project is better suited for schools/students specializing in animation. There’s a great one not far away, UCF in Orlando, I’m already on it.

Looking ahead to bookstore promotions, I heard back from the highly acclaimed local favorite, another wall. Their fee is $500 plus their refreshment packages starting at $125. Even if I sold 40 books, which I’m thinking is a good day, I’m losing money. I’m also running a business, not an exercise in vanity ego boosting, I need maximum ROI. Fortunately, there’s Barnes & Noble and another independent local bookstore offering reasonable book promotion opportunities.

Bookstore promotions are something I need to do to support overall sales, considering that over 70% of books are sold online. Thinking ahead to a second book, I need to show publishers I’m a motivated promoter, a strong partner willing to do the legwork needed. My background in construction development has prepared me well for this. I was trained to anticipate and identify potential obstacles, devise creative and best solutions to overcome them, then manage a team to deliver the project on time & within budget. What works for buildings will work for books.
