Day 5

I had to sit down, I could feel my heart working too hard and was out of breath.  I wasn’t finishing a marathon, just doing normal yard work.  This didn’t feel right.  I called it a day, let it go.  My wife didn’t let it go; she relayed this news to my nurse practitioner daughter who notified my cardiologist.  The next day I had to report to his office.  Felt like a kid being sent to the Principal’s Office.

He asked me detailed questions, at the end of that he paused with a serious look.  “I don’t like this pain, I’m sending you to a specialist at the hospital, we need to check this out.”  Within hours I was being prepped for angioplasty, a procedure where they view your arteries and use a balloon or permanent stent to open clogged arteries.

A lifetime of bacon cheeseburgers & fries caught up to me.  Turns out I had 2 clogged arteries, one they call the widow maker was 95% clogged, another was at 65%.  Two stents later I felt like I had dodged a bullet.  It changed my diet, and my thinking.  Who knows how close I came to leaving my family and a book half done?

As I see it, God gave me extra time, how much, only He knows.  It was my wake-up call, I had to get a move on.  I picked up my writing pace.  The thought that hundreds of hours of work could all be for nothing, it lit a fire under me.  More concerning than the wasted time was the thought that my important message, meant to save others in need, might never happen.  This book isn’t about me or my personal achievement, it’s bigger than that.

In retrospect, I think we all tend to meander thru life thinking our check out time is well in the future.  Since I don’t have a signed contract with God guaranteeing X number of days, I must balance my sense of urgency with faith in His plan for me.

Romans 8:28 – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

At the start of my book, I thought writing was my biggest challenge.  Could I find the time and energy, weave a cohesive compelling theme, and overcome the surprises, like health issues?  I’ve answered yes to most of that, it’s the next steps that I wasn’t prepared for.

From what I’m learning, the publishing process is like raising a child.  Finishing the writing is the birthing part.  Next is editing, the toddler stage, shaping your baby.  Then comes childhood – selecting your team to tackle publishing, marketing, graphics, social media, and others I haven’t yet thought of.  This is the all-important stage where you select your child’s school, where I sacrifice money I can’t afford to give my child the best opportunity.  This is the leap of faith.  It’s probably a good thing I wasn’t aware of all of this in the beginning.

Eventually, hopefully, your child makes it to graduation.  That’s the moment I hear back from that reader whose life I changed.  When that happens (note the conviction here), do I prepare for my moment in the spotlight?  No, I take a knee and give praise and glory to God.
