Writing a novel meant I started with a sizable assortment of things I’d have to do myself, figure out, or find help for. Money wasn’t on my list. Among my growing list of naïve assumptions, I figured money wasn’t needed, or at least very little. I think I hear fellow writers laughing.
My thought process went like this. Writing costs me nothing but my time, which I could write off as a hobby. Once I finished writing, I would send my manuscript to publishers, one of which would see the amazing bestseller potential and quickly rush me a signing bonus. Great, no money out of my pocket, no financial downside whatsoever. I imagine the writers are now rolling on the floor laughing.
As I mentioned in my DAY 4 post, my daughter gave me the book, “The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published.” I’m guessing she understood my plan. Page by page, reality sank in. I thought writing was going to be the hard part. It quickly became apparent that a much more complicated stage was beginning. It required editing, graphics, marketing, promoting, blogging, podcasting and more. All of which came before I’d get to publishing.
My laundry list of To-Do items was mind blowing. I should have known better. In my field of residential construction development, I’m the guy who does the due diligence. Identifying pitfalls, creating a checklist of requirements, done it for years. It would have made sense to apply that same methodology to my personal project. Or maybe not, I wonder if knowing in the beginning, all that was ahead, would I have started in the first place?
Fortunately, there’s an easy way around most of this, just hire the specialists who do this. Unfortunately, there goes my no cost plan. There’s no way around it, there’s only so much I can do myself in a field I know next to nothing about. That faith I was touting in my DAY 1 post is really called into question when I had to dig into my retirement funds to float this operation.
I guess that’s how faith works, sometimes your actions need to back up your convictions. Still, money is the one thing I struggle with. Not just me, maybe a billion others too. Don’t get me wrong, having a comfortable nest egg is good financial planning. But it’s no guarantee of security, nest eggs can disappear in a flash. I’ve been there several times and took away the wrong lesson. Thought I just needed a bigger nest egg.
Actually, I just needed bigger faith, and to put that faith in the right place.
Proverbs 11:28 ESV – “Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.” When hard times hit, I’ve been quick to call on God. When good times arrived, I’d take the credit, it was my hard work paying off, right? Wrong! Who provided my job, my health, my next breath? Finally, at this late stage of life, I’m learning to give praise and thanks in all situations.
2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV) – “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
