I can’t remember the first day I had to push myself to write. I know it wasn’t long after I started. It doesn’t take long for enthusiasm to crash head on into reality. Sometimes you’re not feeling it but need to plow ahead anyway. Writing a novel is a long-term commitment. I’m short term, easily distracted, and highly impatient (my wife will gladly confirm). I realized from the start that I’d need to hold on to my enthusiasm, knowing I’d need every ounce.
The theme of my book tackles the universal struggle of good versus evil. Spoiler alert – as Christians we know who wins in the end. I know which side I’m on, which means I know who’s working against me, confirmed by none other than Jesus. Shortly before His arrest and crucifixion, He acknowledged Satan’s authority: “I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me” (John 14:30).
No good endeavor we pursue in this world will go unchallenged. Sorry to say many of my challenges have been effective. One of my biggest obstacles is right next to me, my not-so-smart phone. I say not-so-smart but between the two of us I guess I’m the dumb one, I’m addicted to immediately checking every notice. I’ve had three since I started writing this post, distraction is an effective weapon. Wait a moment, just received another notice.
Another effective weapon is self-doubt, that inner voice questioning my ability, telling me I’m wasting my time. This novel is a first-time leap of faith. I’m a rookie, novice, neophyte, who am I to think I can write a novel? OK, any pinhead can write a novel, I’m talking about a novel that people will want to read, one they’ll spend their hard-earned money on and recommend to their friends. Like I said, leap of faith.
OK, I covered faith in DAY 1, besides when I expressed my self-doubt out loud, my wife hit back with logic. She’s good at that. She reminded me I’m setting an example, that I finish what I start, an example for our entire extended family. We’re talking several dozen when you include nieces, nephews, cousins, and on & on. Big responsibility, they all look up to me. I accepted early on that I have to finish this. No quitting allowed.
While there’s no shortage of forces working against me, it’s not wise to dwell on that. The reality is I’m in the best hands possible. “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Proverbs 16:3.
Fortunately, I’m not dependent on my own skill. I ask for and receive His help daily. When this project achieves the success I’m confident is forthcoming, I have a picture in my mind that will need to be expressed some way. It’s a picture of my team and I kneeling in a field at night, each of us with one raised arm pointing to a bright light in the sky. Like the Star of Bethlehem. It’s all of us giving praise and glory to the One who made it possible.
