I’m a week away from finishing my novel!  Ok, I don’t know if that’s true but I’m tired of saying I’m 2 weeks away.  I did finish the climax scene and I’m wrapping up the ending.  My next goal is to finish my 1st edit by end of November.  The promotional sharks have noticed, I’m being besieged with offers to do everything from proofreading, editing, formatting, marketing, and publishing.  This is where an agent is helpful, but some of this needs to be done before I can even approach agents.  

 

On the book trailer front, I’ve closed applications.  There are 4 interested individuals, 2 from FSU Film School and 2 from the promotion world.  I had reached out to the top 20 film schools via direct email to deans or professors.  FSU took the lead among respondents, my offer was passed on to their students and I received 3 responses, 1 declined when he heard this was not live acting.  A professor at the Univ. Of Texas (Austin) directed me to their job board where I posted my offer, unfortunately there were no respondents.  Three universities (Chapman, Boston U, & Rhode Island School of Design), each declined.  The other 15 schools – crickets.  

 

My offer is/was a great opportunity for a film student to showcase their talent and perhaps gain recognition.  This exposure opportunity was explained to one Dean who wasn’t interested in the competition format, he wanted a direct award.  I told him the trailer will be distributed to & hosted by; Facebook (including new FB page dedicated to Primis), Twitter (X), YouTube, Website (charrob16.com), Instagram, Linkedin, Email list of followers, Sci-fi Groups, Christian Groups, sent to potential agents & publishers, and distributed via my Social Media Manager to other targeted individuals.  Will also submit to eligible book trailer competitions. 

 

That wasn’t enough to sway him, he responded, “$500 is roughly equivalent to 1.5 days of work for someone who has recently graduated from college.”  Here I thought I was helping a student to launch their career, offering an opportunity to build their portfolio with a commercial project that will be promoted far & wide.  If I wanted to spend $2,000 on a trailer, I’d be contacting seasoned award-winning trailer producers.  I’m taking some risk in my approach, hoping to get a high-level production from an unproven student.  My approach wasn’t driven by cost saving.

 

My team building approach is centered on finding and rewarding new talent, opening opportunities to others like me who are breaking new ground.  I don’t subscribe to the entitlement mentality that says I deserve because… fill in the blank.  That thinking doesn’t sit well with someone like me who worked at McDonald’s as a teenager, never expecting to be paid a “living wage.”  Neither did my college degree or my GC license entitle me to any pay level.  I always expected to prove my value first and EARN my way up the pay scale.  

 

A great thing about Primis is its unlimited potential. If you’ve read my prior posts, you know Who is driving this project and why that’s more than possible.  Should this book achieve widespread success, I want a deserving team of believers to share the success, a team not focused on $ but on the bigger mission.  Rewards will come to those with the right motives.
