Day 15

My search for a book trailer producer has begun.  The first step was identifying the top 20 film schools and who to contact within those schools.  Each of these individuals will receive an email, offering their students an opportunity to produce a 90-second trailer.  I’m seeking submissions in the form of a competition or direct award, with either option offering $500 and an opportunity to receive national recognition and awards.  In upcoming posts I’ll share the results of this outreach.

If I had a large budget for book promoting, I could skip this appeal and just hire a top trailer producer.  That could save time and work on my end, but I prefer the path I’m taking.  My low budget ground-up approach to marketing offers me the opportunity to build a team of hungry, motivated, newbies like me.  I’m not buying my way to sales, that’s not success.  The goal here is to build a team of like-minded artists who’re also looking for their big break, their opportunity to showcase their skills and share in our bigger mission.

Part of my planning ahead involves future book signings.  Towards that effort I visited 2 very different bookstores yesterday.  The first was a an independent widely acclaimed bookstore with a passionate following of authors and book lovers.  Just walking around this store, I soaked in the vibe of this unique environment I’m looking to be a part of.  Seeking inspiration is what lured me, I got what I came for.

The second bookstore was my local Barnes & Noble.  Here I was able to find a larger selection of sci-fi, action-adventure books, a few were somewhat similar to mine.  I wanted to see which publishers were most prominent, results showed the big 5 publishers each had offerings, but there was one standout – Tor Publishing, part of Macmillan.  Research confirms they dominate this category, now they’re #1 on my list.  Next step is thinking about book signings

The manager at Barnes & Noble indicated they do many book signings.  Of course they do, it’s a risk free moneymaker for them.  They require the author to bring the books and they take 40% of every sale.  They provide the space and send out emails promoting the event.  Count me in to visit some upcoming signings to see how much turnout they generate.  I’ll be checking to see what led folks to show up, an email from B&N or a connection to the author.   I’ll do the same for the indie bookstore, another report coming your way.  My To-Do List is growing.

The process to getting published can sometimes be draining and discouraging, there are forces working against this Godly message.  It’s up to me to resist those forces & stay positive.  “Don’t hesitate to be enthusiastic—be on fire in the Spirit as you serve the Lord!”  Romans 12:11
