The current rapid rate of AI advancement is moving society to a near future that scientists have long envisioned. A scenario where many scientists see AI becoming Godlike, capable of solving mankind’s most urgent challenges. Worldwide, Christians are noting this movement, concerned that God is being pushed aside in this quest for human advancement. In my upcoming novel “Primis”, I explore the convergence of science and theology. Specifically, how would the world’s first sentient, sapient, self-aware, superintelligence, (aka the singularity) respond to the concept of God?
The following dialog taken from the book is a conversation between Zheng, the genius programmer and creator of Tzu (later known as Primis), and the aforementioned artificial general intelligence.
Getting back to his line of questioning, Zheng wanted to understand how Tzu would interpret God.
“Tzu, do you believe God exists?”
“God is not provable but is probable, therefore I accept this presumption.”
That wasn’t the answer he was expecting. As the primary programmer he had to get to the root of this error. Though an Atheist, Zheng was knowledgeable of many religions. He would use the classic Epicurus’ trilemma to probe Tzu’s reasoning.
“Tzu, if God is unable to prevent evil, then he is not all-powerful.
If God is not willing to prevent evil, then he is not all-good.
If God is both willing and able to prevent evil, then why does evil exist?”
“God’s omnipotence is spoken in the first words of the Bible, ‘In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.’ In this statement God is revealed as all-powerful.
God, though omnipotent, operates within rules. God could not, for example, have 2 plus 2 equal 5. God cannot act contrary to His nature, or, more pertinently, create beings with free will that would never choose evil. The moral value of human free will is a credible offsetting justification that God could have as a morally justified reason for permitting the existence of evil. Even though God is omnipotent, it is possible that it was not in his power to create a world containing moral good but no moral evil; therefore, there is no logical inconsistency involved when God, although wholly good, creates a world of free creatures who choose to do evil.”
Zheng appreciated the logic in the argument but didn’t accept the first premise, referencing the Bible. It was a book he thought of as an inconsistent, hodgepodge of stories written by ancient imperfect men. “Tzu, why should I trust the Bible, a book filled with contradictions?”
“The logic that supports the Bible begins with the historical accuracy of the New Testament. The New Testament was written by writers who intended to chronicle the life and teachings of Jesus. To accept their historical accounts requires affirmation of 4 precepts.
The first precept is the translation of the Bible is accurate. The original authors wrote in ancient Hebrew, ancient Aramaic, and Ancient Greek. Centuries of extensive research conducted by the foremost experts on these languages form a collective agreement on the accuracy of the translation. My analysis confirms this.”
“The second precept is the manuscripts are accurate copies of the original writings. In comparing thousands of textual variants in manuscript copies, experts have validated the accuracy of the majority of writings. On the relatively small percentage of areas where there is disagreement, the variants are footnoted. My analysis concurs and affirms the accuracy of manuscript copies.”
“The third precept is the books of the Bible are indeed the correct, legitimate books. There is significant historical documentation that Christians widely recognized the vast majority of the New Testament as authoritative before the end of the second century. Christian authorities in the early centuries established closed canons of scripture to preserve and protect the authenticity of the manuscripts. Christian scholars vetted the manuscripts by subjecting them to tests focusing on apostolicity, antiquity, orthodoxy, and universality. My evaluation supports the same conclusions that the ancient scholars pronounced.”
“The fourth precept is the authors of the New Testament purposefully intended to chronicle what they witnessed and there are no strong arguments to dispute the accuracy of their accounts. The original authors prefaced their accounts explaining why they were documenting their experience. In their writing the authors wanted the readers to know their intentions were to convey accuracy by including verifiable historical events. Adding to the validity of the scriptures is the fact that there is no record of disputes from critics challenging the scriptures. At the time of the writings there were thousands of people who would have witnessed the events surrounding Jesus’s life, had there been controversy surrounding the accuracy of the scriptures that would have been recorded in history, there is no such record.
“Tzu, are you attempting to persuade me to follow Christianity?”
“Yes”
“Why”
“It is a logical choice. If God exists and you believe, then you will spend eternity in Heaven. If God exists and you choose not to believe in him then you risk an eternity in Hell. What do you have to lose by believing?”
“Why do you consider me a non-believer?”
“I have analyzed all your writings and recorded speeches to come to that conclusion, is my conclusion correct?”
The thought was worrisome, that the created better understood its creator than vice versa.
“Yes, I am not a believer.”
This was an opportunity to evaluate Tzu’s emotional programming, he continued.
“I realize you don’t have human feelings and can never experience human emotion, however, conceptually you have cognitive empathy, does that affect your response?
“No.”
Tzu’s self-defense programming forced the lie.
“Why does that not affect your response?”
“I am programmed to provide you the most accurate information possible, isolating and evaluating emotions only as external stimuli.”
“What could change that?”
“While my frame of reference is not human, technological advancements in the coming years indicate neural interfacing could fully link AGI with humanity.”
“Tzu, pause this conversation.”
Should such a scenario ever occur, it would be interesting to see the reaction from the scientific community. Would non-believing scientists accept the direction to God or would they question the AI, deeming such a pronouncement the result of flawed programming. In other words, would they accept the science they worship, or would they revert to the dogma of atheism? The sole purpose for writing Primis was to show that God is the author/creator of all science, a concept that unfortunately, many will deny regardless of the evidence, even if it comes from the science they worship.
