It was my swing for the fences. For a writer, being invited on Oprah is a winning lotto ticket, so why not swing for that. Realistically I knew that I might have better odds with a lotto ticket, but I also knew that I’d have a zero chance if I didn’t try. I drafted my words carefully. The challenge is grabbing attention and sparking interest using as few words as possible. Long pitches are passed over in a glance. Once I had my condensed blurb it was off to the website.
As much time as I spend crafting customized pitches, I spend even more trying to find the delivery route. I’m typically trying to find the “Contact Us” option which more and more I’m finding is nonexistent. Oprah who has her empire spread out like branches on a tree is no exception. The Book Club section seemed like a logical place to start. Nope, no options there. After 5 minutes of searching, I was beginning to feel like I was in a house of mirrors, walking headfirst into mirror after mirror. I should have permanent bruising on my nose, I’ve been through a lot of these.
Eventually I was funneled to a FAQ section, it did have an answer to the question, “Can I submit a book for consideration?” The answer, “We do not accept submissions for Oprah’s Book Club.” In other words, don’t call us we’ll call you. Dead end, never even got to make my pitch. Why couldn’t she accept submissions? Even if they were routed to the circular file (aka – wastebasket), at least we could dream. I don’t expect to win the lotto when I buy a ticket, but at least I get to dream. I’m finding this promotional part of publishing to be a rollercoaster ride.
When disappointment hits as it frequently does, I move on quickly, expecting the uphill ride next. It didn’t take long. The same day I connected with a published sci-fi writer with 2 books to his credit. He shared advice and generously offered to read and critique my manuscript, this is huge! I quickly sent him my Query Letter to provide an overview of the book. Just as quickly I received his comments on the letter, all positive with one word replacement suggestion that made sense. Day by day my prayers are being answered, help is arriving and will no doubt continue.

Even the best writers (I’m not putting myself in that category) accept that their first drafts are a rough work in progress needing refinement. If I do have a diamond in the rough, for sure it’s encased in a hardened turd. Getting to the diamond may require jackhammers. I’m fine with that, even knowing it could take several months or several years. Note to God – I’m praying for months here.
The point is you do what’s necessary to reach your goal. In my case that’s a published book opening minds to God’s presence in our lives. All that wrapped in a compelling action adventure that folks will enjoy and recommend to family and friends. I’ll continue to swing for the fence until I put one over.
