Day 12

In my sourcing for literary agents, I’ve run into a dilemma, my book has an identity crisis.  Primis is a Christian themed, sci-fi, action adventure set in current times.  That’s the problem, which section in the bookstore does the book belong, Christian, sci-fi, or spy thrillers?  The answer isn’t evident, which I discovered when looking for similar books.

Agents need to compare proposed books in the same genre, with similar themes.  If there’s no other book like mine, we have a problem.  Categorization is more than where a book belongs, agents need to sell publishers on why a book will do well based on similar books that did well.  Yes, I could be the first, but agents and publishers aren’t gamblers, they need what realtors refer to as comps (comparable properties).  No comps spell high risk, which they typically take a pass on.

With all the books out there, you’d think there must be one like mine.  I did a thorough search and the closest I came up with was i robot.  It has the benevolent AI but differs in its use of robots and futuristic time period.  To make sure I wasn’t missing anything I queried a sci-fi group.  They came up blank.  While I like the idea that Primis is a unique genre, getting an agent to see this as an opportunity will be a tough sell.  That’s my expectation, let’s see.

There’s so much riding on my ability to find an agent, and not just any, I need a top notch, rock star agent.  Preferably one with connections to the big 5 publishers.  Finding this agent is the difference between landing a major publisher who can launch Primis into bestseller land versus self-publishing.  I know, many self-published books have become bestsellers, but the odds are lower and requiring more of my time to promote.

So far, I’ve identified 34 potential agents that fit my requirements and I’m looking for more.  Each one has their own submittal requirements.  That’s a lot of work for someone doing this as a part time mission.  Before I can start this process, I need to finish the book’s ending, still 2 weeks away.  Added to that is editing the chapters I’ll need to submit then polishing my cover & query letters.  Getting all this done is another milestone I’m anxious to meet.

Did I use the word “anxious”?  Note to self: I have a partner who’s opening the doors, His plan is already established.  I need to do my part and then relax knowing I’m in the best hands possible.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV)
