My social media outreach is working, hooray! Numbers are climbing but not everyone is happy with me. One respondent offered to send me his book in exchange for my comments. I wish I had the time, I’m still only halfway through my How-To book on getting published. I responded with a question, “how long is your book?”, and could he send me a summary? His reply:
“No problem. I see there’s no interest, hasn’t even opened the link to read the index and presentation you’re asking me about now, so let’s leave it alone. Good life.” THERE WAS NO LINK IN HIS MESSAGES. That’s how I responded, minus the yelling CAP LETTERS. No reply.
I can accept that not every engagement will have a happy ending, it’s to be expected when you put yourself out there. A good percentage of respondents are business opportunists. I’m hearing from folks selling book cover designs, promotional help, proof reading / editing, and publishing help. Someone just asked me if I’m, “an author aiming to expand his buisness and book to reach to millions of readers with out no stress.” I left the grammatical mistakes intact on purpose, I see a lot of that.
How do I respond to that, “No, I’m happy to reach no one, and I love stress, need more in my life.” At least this self-promoter was upfront with her pitch. The sneaky ones will engage in extended dialog suggesting they have a shared interest in my project, be it AI, Christian ethics, sci-fi, or action adventures. After the fake chit chat, I’m hit with the real agenda, they’re selling me something. My need to promote and entice prospective readers invites this time-consuming annoyance. It’s the cost of doing business.
I need to balance my skepticism with an open mind for opportunities. I just connected with a talented book cover designer. Her portfolio is impressive, an assortment of beautiful cover designs. But then came her price, brace yourself. This is going to cost me $30, that’s right, thirty dollars, total! Ok, I’m not one to take advantage, rest assured I’ll pay her much more than that. It doesn’t matter if the exchange rate makes $30 a good payoff in her country, or maybe she’s a student just looking for the experience. God has blessed me and expects me to pass that blessing to others.

I’m looking forward to sharing the book cover with you when it’s finalized. Success of the book may have significant benefits for our cover designer and others. When I started out, I felt the release of the book followed by sales would be the big payoff. I’m finding other unexpected benefits along the way. My social media Director has used income to help youth in her church. The book alone was My big plan, God thinks bigger. I’m blessed to be part of His bigger plan.
