When I started writing my fictional AI Christian themed action adventure novel it was all fun. I had a rough idea of how the story would unfold and creative license to develop it without any interference. For me, creative freedom is uplifting, rewarding, and highly personal. It’s my personal stamp on my personal POV. That’s about to end, my next step, editing by others, may be far from fun.
I understand and accept the need to collaborate, especially on large projects like my novel. I’m open to direction from experts who share my vision. As my project progresses, the project team grows and I become just one of the workers on the assembly line, one that will need to make compromises to move forward. What I won’t compromise is the vision itself, particularly the Christian theme which has come under attack in the corporate world under the deceptive banner of DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion).
Compromise hasn’t been easy for me. What attracted me to architecture was the naïve notion that I could create amazing designs, designs that would become monuments to my design genius. I can laugh at that now. Not even in architecture school did I find total design freedom. Professors were always present to provide design input which you accepted if you wanted to earn A’s. In the profession it was the client who had the final say. Changes to my best work typically involved cost cutting, removing the nice details. The Ferrari I delivered was transformed into a _________, take your pick of average mediocre vehicles. If you want total design freedom I recommend art, though writing comes close.
From the beginning, I set an easy goal for myself, a metric of success that I felt was very attainable. Simply put, I wanted to publish my book then hear back from at least one reader who turned their life to God because of what they read. That remains my break-even point, the point at which all my hard work pays off, worth the effort. Just one converted soul. Notice I haven’t set any goals for books sold or income generated, I leave that in God’s hands. Of course, I dream of much more but anything beyond that one converted soul is just added blessings.
In my Day 1 blog I shared my key to success – faith. Faith comes after your request, and this is where God invites us to be bold.
John 16:24 – “Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.”
Matthew 7:7 – “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
